We applaud Pope Benedict XVI for joining Twitter and engaging the on-line world in a greater conversation. He has made significant progress in a short time on Twitter:
- Pope Benedict now has over 1.2 Million Followers on Twitter (as of 12/21/12)
- He has surpassed Justin Beiber in the number of retweets.
- He has surpassed Joel Olsteen as the most followed Christian on the internet.
Here is an interview with the Social Innovation Director of Twitter commenting on Pope’s new account:
It is amazing to look at the Twitter feed of Pope Benedict. It is full of anger-filled statements, but also has many questions of those hungry for faith. With the recent horrible tragedy in Newtown, CT, the Pope’s Twitter feed exploded with questions to @Pontifex about faith, God, Jesus, and Evil. The Pope responded with love and prayer on Twitter, and with longer responses in writing, video, and radio. Twitter allows an interactivity with The Holy Father that was not possible before, and I think it a truly historic moment in The Roman Catholic Church. Catholic’s who have fallen away from the faith, and those who are inquiring into the faith now have an incredible resource in Catholic New Media using social media like (Facebook, Twitter, and Google+), and with blogs, podcast, and websites. It is truely an exciting time fo the New Evangelization with all these tools at our disposal. As Brandon Vogt was recently quoted as saying, “St. Augustine would have give his right arm if he could have the internet to spread The Gospel.” Link to Pope’s Twitter Account.
